Also known as a designer dog, a hybrid dog, crossbred, or crossbreed is the offspring of two different types of purebred dogs. The names of these designer dogs are created by mixing the syllables of the two purebreed dogs that were crossed (Schnauzer and Poodle = Schnoodle; Pomeranian and Yorkshire Terrier = Porkie).
The benefits of a hybrid dog are twofold: desirable traits between two different breeds can be passed on to the offspring, such as size, temperment, shedding rates, as well as loweing the chances of inheriting the 350 or more genetic disorders that purebreds are prone to. There is no guarantee that the resulting hybrid dogs are to be a complete success in these areas, but the probability is higher.
